****THE NEW COUNTRY MATRIX HAS BEEN POSTED******
WELCOME TO
LIMUN 2012
Welcome Delegates! Yes, delegates. It is time. Time for the intense, epic three day conference that is LIMUN. For the past twenty-four years, LAMP has held this conference to the point where it has become a deeply ingrained tradition of the LAMP experience. Now, LIMUN is proud to present the 25th annual conference! That’s right; for a quarter of a century, LAMP students and other scholars from invited schools have come together to resolve the international issues at hand. LIMUN, LAMP Invitational Model United Nations, is a conference in which students act as delegates from certain countries. With this, delegates should keep in mind that they are representing a country, and therefore should embody their countries’ beliefs and ideals and dictate their words and actions accordingly. Delegates should not only stimulate intellectual, productive debate, but, more importantly, cooperatively work and compromise with other delegates while discussing the topics and debating possible solutions. Good understanding of the country’s position and thorough research of the topics are essential ingredients for informed and profound debate that will produce efficient, well-organized working papers. Mind you, LIMUN is not all about winning or dominating debate. It is a cooperative amalgamation of inputs and ideas from all delegates of all countries. This point cannot be emphasized enough: respect for other delegates’ stances is vital in keeping a cooperative atmosphere during debate. Moreover, have discretion over which points to emphasize or which points to deem dilatory to move along debate in a productive manner. Do not hesitate to introduce new ideas in debate; it is exactly that innovation that clears a path for original and possibly a new effective alternative for a solution. Be prepared, know the context for your topics, research your country’s position, and come ready with an open mind and an enthusiasm to work with others! LIMUN will be held on January 25-27, 2012 at First Baptist Church, who has been generous to proffer their building for our use. However, the first session and registration will be held at LAMP on Wednesday night. Students should report directly to First Baptist Church on Thursday and Friday. Remember delegates, attendance will be checked; tardiness, counted against the school record. Carpooling is encouraged, as parking is limited. Each delegate will be asked to turn in position papers. Delegates will be ineligible for individual awards if they do not complete their paper, and delegations may be ineligible for delegation awards if delegates within a delegation do not complete position papers. These papers should be concise, no more than a page single spaced, and should give a clear idea of a nation's stance on an issue in addition to previous action taken on an issue and possible solutions. Papers will be turned in to the delegates chair at the beginning of committee. Leading the 25th annual LIMUN conference is an exceptional and eclectic, not to mention handsome, group, each chair heading one of the eight committees. Half consist of the main General Assemblies (GAs); the other half, specialized committees. Each committee contributes an equally important role to the whole of the United Nations, and the only distinguishing factor is the size: specialized committees generally consist of no more than 25 delegates while the main committees are larger and more inclusive representation of nations. Firstly, LIMUN is proud to have Brandon Hooks chairing the World Health Organization (WHO), a committee dedicated to addressing health issues that present a serious threat to the international community. Next, LIMUN presents Mary Virginia Harper chairing the Special Political (SPECPOL) committee, in which delegates will come to solve international political disputes. Lucas Tribble is chairing the Disarmament and International Security (DISEC) committee and will lead his delegates in supporting peace by disarming those who use arms to threaten international security. Chairing Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian (SOCHUM) committee is Mary Parrish Cobb, who will deal with humanitarian laws and the social aspects of international affairs. Now LIMUN is proud to present the chairs of the specialized committees, starting with Jaewon Back who will be chairing UNICEF, a committee committed to help children worldwide from different injustices. Celia Carnes is chairing the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a committee in which delegates settle legal disputes filed by states and to advise on legal question submitted to it by other UN organizations and committees while looking snazzy in black robes. Chairing the Security Council is MinJi Suh, who leads the overriding decision-making committee capable of placing economic sanctions and sending peacekeeping troops abroad. Lastly, thanks to last year's success, LIMUN will again be featuring Nation Building, a committee devoted to establishing order and government functions in nations emerging from a period of war or other types of upheaval. Chairing this committee is our very own Cecilia Robinson.Sharp western attire, fresh debate, and a memorable experience. How can LIMUN get even more awesome? With your hard work and preparation, folks. Keep in mind, the enjoyment and success of LIMUN depends on how much effort you put into your studies. With that, all the chairs and Mr. Baker welcome you to an unforgettable MUN experience with this notable quarter-century LIMUN conference. Be excited, because with LIMUN come good times in committee, intense debates, and yes, shiny trophies. MINJI SUH SECRETARY GENERAL
